Where a vessel has multiple commanders listed, these are generally being used as the flagship of a larger squadron. Unless stated otherwise, officers should be assumed to be of the rank of Captain. Note that the ranks are not consistently abbreviated, and (for example) Rear Admiral may be given variously as "Rear Ad.", "R. Ad." or "R. A."
